Greg and Peter: Roosevelt (Spokane Arm) - 4/11

Peter F. and I fished from 830AM to 3PM under sunny skies and pleasant weather. We launched at Porcupine Bay with no problem despite the low lake elevation. We caught 12 small walleyes with most in the 11 to 15 inch range. We kept 8 small and skinny fish.

More details: Our first destination was the Buoy 5 area. We didn't quite make it all the way to Buoy 5. The shallow and meandering channel made it tough going. After hitting a couple of rocks with the boat, we aborted our plan to fish the deep pools near Buoy 5. We joined a group of 2 other boats about a mile downstream of Buoy 5. We saw 2 fish caught in about 90 minutes. This area was snaggy and becoming increasingly crowded (8-9 boats when we left) so we decided to fish elsewhere. The water was swift and stained which made navigating shallow rocky areas difficult. We hit rocky bottom several times.

At the boat ramp, we heard of small fish being caught near the Cemetery below Porcupine Bay. We rigged up with smile blades and bottom bouncers and started fishing below the Cemetery and slow trolled (1 mph) toward McCoy's. We started catching fish (a double) near a pair of tall rock bluffs. We targeted areas with rock/rubble bottom from noon until 3PM in 40-50 feet of water. We got bites on all the smile blade colors we tried (chrome, chartreuse, motor-oil). The fish were tiny, but it was hard to leave a spot when we were getting bit consistently.

Lake Elevation: 1248 ft and falling.
