Travis: Snake River - 8/3
I started my day about 11 AM as it takes a little bit to get down there. It was sunny and Hot! Water temps when I got on the water were at 70 degrees. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and the wind was almost nill. The Snake River can be dangerous with too much wind, but can be slow fishing if there isn't any.
I launched out of Lyons Ferry and started the day trolling through the Grainery and the Mouth of the TC River. Neither spot even offered a hit, but were happy to consume 2 hours of my day. Shortly before 1PM I cruised up to the Dam and trolled through there a few times. I put two in the boat on my first pass using a Wicked Custom Jigs and Spoons design called Tequila Sunrise. It has a bronze body and a red head... I think a Copperhead on a Flicker Minnow might've also been effective. Both fish were picked up in between the last set of powerlines and the first picnic bench. There was very little wind and they had 5 chutes open on the dam, so current was raging!
After that, I fished down on the flat across from TX Rapids and in the next 3 hours, managed to put three additional eaters in the livewell. By this time, it was getting nearly time to pick an evening spot.
I usually like to start and end my day down at the Grainery so I did just that, after a quick pass through the mouth of the TC River, once again. I fished the @#%$ out of the grainery with literally no action until my last pass. On my last pass, this 6+ pounder nailed my #213 which I call Snake Eyes and is my go-to bait for evenings on the Snake. Honestly, I thought she was going to be bigger. With the way she was fighting and the initial takedown, I thought for sure that I had on a 10+. Still, I am very satisfied with the day.
She re-hooked herself in my net, while on the floor of the boat, which caught her gill and caused some blood. I made double sure she was healthy enough to release. Her parting shot was consistent with her overall attitude, splashing water in my face causing me to think, "Yea, that b#%@ is too angry to die, she's gonna be fine"
With the sun, (no clouds) the heat and the lack of wind, everyone was struggling. I think I did about the best out of the people I spoke with, which were a few. ( I can be chatty) As normal, everyone else was pulling spinners with the current.
The days tally: 5 solid eaters with only one below 18" and one worthy of release. She was 26" long and a bit over 6 lbs. but fought like she was river barge.....
