Greg: Roosevelt - 9/19
I had my best September day ever on Lake Roosevelt. For years, I have struggled to catch more than a handful of fish per day during the month of September. On Thursday, we had a 40 fish day with a dozen of them in the 16 to 18 inch range. Many of the walleyes were 13 to 15 inches, but we weren’t complaining. The action was consistent for the 5 hours it took for us to find more than enough fish to clean and freeze for the winter.
More info for club members: My friend Cheri from church has been asking to go walleye fishing all summer, and we finally found a time that worked. Even though she grew up in Wisconsin, she had never caught a walleye. We launched out of Porcupine Bay, and It took her about 5 minutes to catch her first one in front of Blue Creek. Within 15 minutes, she had 3 in the box, and I hadn’t even started fishing! Between 10 am and 2 pm, we never left Blue Creek and continued to catch one after another between 45 and 60 feet. It didn’t seem to matter what color smile blade we used. By the afternoon, we were using 2 inch scraps of crawlers, and it didn’t matter. Bouncers of 2 and a half or 3 ounces worked the best to reach the deep water along steep breaks. There were an abundance of small bass schooled with the walleyes as well.
Doug N was on his way up the Arm, and we waved him down as he passed. He fished along side us, and was catching them at a good clip, too.
