I made the run up to North Gorge campground for an overnighter. I got there mid afternoon on Labor Day as others were leaving the lake. I fished from 430 PM to 8 PM on Monday and got 12 keepers. I got on the water around 830 AM on Tuesday and fished until 2 PM and got another 9 keepers. Most of the walleyes were between 15 to 16 inch fish, but several were too small to keep. I got a couple 18 inchers, but wasn’t able to find nice sized walleyes consistently. The water temperature was 53 degrees. Lake level 1271 feet and rising.

More info for club members: I spent some time this morning cleaning bird poop off my boat and bimini top. A few of you will know what I am talking about because I spent quite a few hours Monday and Tuesday fishing the swallow nests above China Bend. Tom’s jigging seminar at our last meeting inspired me to catch some walleyes jigging, and I do love a good jig bite. Pods of walleyes would move in and out of the eddy near the swallow nests. I caught fish between 28 and 45 feet using a 3/8 and 1/2 oz chartreuse jig head and 3 inch olive colored curly tail grub tipped with a crawler. I also had good success pulling 2.5 ounce bottom bouncers and smile blades (chartreuse) below the China Bend Island in 30 to 35 feet, but my inner Tom kept calling me back to the swallow nests to fish jigs and to get pooped on.
