I enjoyed beautiful weather on what was probably my last day fishing out of my boat for the season. I launched out of Porcupine Bay around 9 AM with areas of fog and low clouds over the lake. The air temperature was 35 degrees with a water temperature in the low to mid 50s. By early afternoon, the sky was clear with temperatures in the low 50s and no wind. Fishing was slow. I managed to catch 9 walleyes, but the majority were too small to keep.
More info for club members: I caught a couple of 19 inch walleyes across the channel from Porcupine Bay before the fog and low clouds cleared. One came slow trolling with a chartreuse smile blade and crawler. I marked several fish in that area, so I hit anchor lock and tossed blade baits and jigs for 45 minutes. I didn’t even feel the 2nd 19 incher bite the jig…the take was so subtle. I tried various points and humps downstream of Porcupine with no success. I ran up the Arm about a mile above Buoy 3. I landed 3 or 4 small walleyes on bouncers…again chartreuse was the preferred color. I ended the day at Blue Creek where I got 4 or 5 dinks trolling the edge of the long flat that enters the channel.
For me, the walleyes in the Arm this year were smaller and less numerous than the last couple of years. There are a lot of 11 to 14 inch walleyes that will hopefully grow to be keepers over the next few years. The few times I fished Kettle Falls were more productive for walleyes 16 inches and above.
