Greg and kids: Roosevelt - 8/11/2022
We made a quick camping trip to Roosevelt for the Persied meteor shower. It was hot (mid 90s) when we arrived at the lake. After setting up camp and swimming for a while, we concentrated on catching supper. Catching fish was important, because we didn’t pack any food as a back up plan. I thought it would take less than an hour to get 3 or 4 walleyes for dinner, but it was nearly 7 PM before we put a couple walleyes in the live well. My son got a 19 incher and my daughter quickly got a 14 incher to provide enough for a fish fry. We also released a 10 inch walleye, and my son lost a large rainbow trout. As for viewing the Persieds, we were treated to mainly clear skies. The kids saw several meteors as we floated in the boat under the stars, and lots of bats darting above the boat. The bright full moon and distant lightning were less than optimal for viewing, but we still enjoyed trying.
More info for club members: We camped at Porcupine Bay. We didn’t start fishing until 4 PM. Our first spot was Blue Creek which isn’t my favorite spot when the lake is full pool in the summer. After 20 minutes trolling spinners with no bites, we made the long treck to Buoy 7. I let my 14 year old son drive the boat for the first time which made him feel quite important. We spent 90 minutes at Buoy 7 and marked a few fish in the deeper spots around Buoy 7. However, we only had a 10 incher and a long-line released rainbow to show for our efforts. On the boat trip, my son noticed some waypoints from years ago with his name on them. They were near the yellow pump house in the Narrows, so he drove us there. It was a good choice. Within 20 minutes, he caught his 19 incher on a chartruese pill float rigged with a crawler and my daughter quickly got her 14 incher on a gold smile blade…both came between 35 and 45 feet. The kids agreed that walleye cooked at camp taste better than they do at home!
