Dave and Greg: Roosevelt - 9/18/2022
With work and in-laws in town, I was only able to make it up to Gifford for one day of the Fall Camp Out. I arrived around 9 AM on Sunday to whitecaps and gusty north winds. After spending a couple of hours hanging out at the campground with club members, I hopped onto Dave’s boat to try to find some walleyes. Our first couple of spots produced nothing but a couple of 10 inch walleyes. By early afternoon, the wind decreased and we found a couple spots that held schools of decent sized walleyes. We ended up with 7 keeper walleyes between 15 and 19 inches. Dave also caught a large trout that gave him quite a fight.
More info for club members: September fishing on Roosevelt can be tough, and I had never fished out of Gifford before. We tried a couple of spots where club members had caught some fish earlier in the weekend, but had issues with boat control in the wind. After looking at some lake maps, we decided to make a run down river to a long flat that had a point that extended into the deep lake basin. It was a spot where 60 feet was surrounded by 120 feet. Within 5 minutes, we had a 16 inch walleye and a 20 inch trout. Over the next hour, we pulled another 5 keeper walleyes off that point using 3 ounce bouncers and metallic colored smile blades. Once that spot dried up, we picked another point close to the Gifford area that had similar depth. We caught several more walleyes in that spot before we called it a day around 430 PM. A silver speckled Smile Blade was the best color.
