Greg: Roosevelt - 8/24-25/2023
I fished a couple of days on Roosevelt out of Fort Spokane. I find late August into September difficult as walleyes are usually spread out and frequently on the move. I covered a lot of ground on the first day trying parts of the lake that I had not fished before during the morning. I didn’t catch my first walleye until 1 PM, but had 8 in the boat by the time I quit at 4 PM. On the second day, I fished with Ken out of his boat. We applied the pattern from the first day, and ended up catching 14 walleyes and 2 rainbow trout. The majority of the walleyes we caught were 14 to 16 inches, but I did get a 20 incher on the first day. The water temperature on the main lake was 71 degrees. The weather on day 1 was sunny with a high in the low 80s. Day 2 was cloudy with a high in the mid 70s.

On day 1, I spent the morning below Sterling Point downstream of Lincoln. I tried fishing jigs and blade baits on humps and points…only catching smallmout bass. After lunch, I stopped at the flat near the big rock across from Seven Bays. I pulled spinners in 40 to 60 feet and caught 8 walleyes in about 90 minutes. From there, I tried some spots near Outhouse Flats with no success. Walleyes were spread out along the drop into the deep river channel. I tried several different colors and didn’t find a pattern that the walleyes clearly preferred.
On day 2, Ken and I found 10 walleyes in Nayborly Cove in depths from 35 to 55 feet. We picked up a couple more on the far upstream edge of Outhouse Flats, and a couple more trolling the rocky shoreline just above the point near the Casino. Chartruese Smile Blades and Butterfly Blades caught the majority of our fish behind a 3 ounch bottom bouncer.
