Greg and Kerry: Porcupine Bay - 5/25
I took my neighbor Kerry fishing on the Spokane Arm of Lake Roosevelt on Sunday. He had not been fishing in years, and had never caught a walleye. By the end of the day, he was catching them like a pro. We kept 14 walleyes ranging from 13 to 21 inches. We released another 15 small fish. Lake Roosevelt is on the rise. Be alert driving your boat. There are some logs floating in the lake.
More information: We met Mike O at the boat ramp at 8AM. It was the maiden voyage for his new Lund Crossover. What a beautiful boat! I gave Mike a walkie talkie and we chatted throughout the day. We started near McCoy's and worked up the Arm. Mike started picking up some small fish near the landslide across from Porcupine Bay. Kerry and I didn't have any consistent success until we drifted the Narrows (we got 15 to 20 fish there). Mike hooked up with a couple of bigger fish a mile or two above the Narrows. Then he left for home about 330PM. Kerry and I made the run up to Buoy 5 and fished the eddy for a couple of hours. We caught 10 fish there. Most were dinks, but I did get a 21 inch fish. We saw another boat catch a couple fish over 20 inches. The current near Buoy 5 was very swift, but the water levels were high enough to navigate the channel.
Fish in the Narrows were caught pulling smile blades behind 1 1/2 oz bottom bouncers in 20 feet. Color didn't seem to matter. Larger Colorado blades worked better in the fast current near Buoy 5. A few fish were taken bouncing jigs behind the boat throughout the day, too.
Kerry is happy to catch his first walleye ever. We fried and grilled our catch in the evening. Delicious!!!
