Bill and David F: Porcupine Bay - 5/20-25

I camped at the Porcupine for 6 days.  During this period the water elevation increased 10 feet.  Fishing by myself from 7 - 1pm the first 3 days I kept 31 fish between 14 to 21 inches.  My son arrived Saturday and fished with me through Monday.  During this three day period we kept 59 more… but the average size became less.  Just about all fish were taken from the springs at Mile marker 1 up to the Weeping Wall.

In the afternoon on Sunday we decided to see what was happening down by the Grave Yard.  A few boats were working off the point and since we didn’t see any nets in the air we decided to pull some plugs back up.  Half way up pulling through a mud wash I hooked a 31.5 inch walleye weighing in a 9 lbs 14 oz (my largest from Roosevelt).

Bill F caught this 9lb 14oz walleye in the Spokane Arm trolling a crankbait.

Bill sent me this later.

One item that I forgot to pass along in the previous report.....  I was getting low on crawlers prior to being restocked by my son... while cutting the belly bones of the filet I decided to keep a couple and salt them down in a zip lock over night (similar to brining herring while fishing for salmon)...Doing so firms them up when kept over night.  The next morning I cut them into strips and used them on a slow roll hook while drifting down stream with a 1/2 oz walker - 5 ft lead - smilie blade w/beads...  I was quite surprised how effective this was.. caught about 5 nice walleye using this when drifting the faster water... also caught a couple tipping on a jig... Might be something of others to try as well..  I will continue to keep this in my arsenal... The more I thought about it the more sense it it make... Walleye eat other fish... ehhhh....
