Greg: Porcupine Bay - 8/14
I went back to the Spokane Arm (Lake Roosevelt) to try to duplicate the success that I had with Larry and Brian on Sunday. It didn't take long to locate the fish once again. In the first 3 hours, I boated 15 small walleyes before I went in search of some larger fish. There were some slightly bigger fish downstream, but battery problems with my trolling motor caused me to switch over to trolling crankbaits with my big motor. Trolling cranks was unproductive. I ended up catching at least 25 walleyes. I cleaned 14 walleyes and two trout.
More info: I started fishing the narrows about 2 miles above Buoy 7. My first drift through the deepest part of the channel (25-35 feet) produced a couple of bites and 2 fish. I switched one of my chrome smile blades to on orange Colorado spinner and it was game-on. The orange produced 80 percent of the fish for the rest of the day. After catching 15 fish in the 13-14 inch range, I tried the 40 foot channel near the gravel slide by Buoy 7. The fish there were a bit bigger with a few close to 15 inches. There was one 17 inch fish that was the biggest of the day. When my batteries gave out 4 hours into the trip, I switched to trolling crankbaits with the big motor. No luck there.
There were a few crawdad bits puked into my live well, but most of the fish that I cleaned had shrunken-empty bellies.
