Larry and Greg: Roosevelt - 4/23

We took Larry's boat to Roosevelt today. We caught close to 30 walleyes between 830 AM and 4 PM. Fish ranged from 10 inches to 17 inches. About half were released because they were too small. None of the fish we cleaned had eggs. We also caught a pair of burbot that were between 20 and 22 inches. The water temperature was 49 degrees. The sky was cloudy with temperatures rising into the mid 50s by the afternoon. There was just enough wind to make boat control tough at times.

More info for club members:  We spent most of the day around the mouth of Blue Creek. The majority of the fish were caught between 40 and 60 feet of water pulling Smile Blades with Slow Death Hooks baited with half a crawler. Color didn't seem to matter much. Vertical jigging a blade bait yielded 8 to 10 fish for me.

It was Larry's first trip with his new Humminbird Helix with a Navionics chip. He got the unit with GPS and down imaging. For less then $350, I was impressed with everything the fish finder could do. A couple of years ago, a comparable fish finder would have been close to a thousand dollars.
