Jim K: Roosevelt - 4/30

Fished Saturday 4/30/2016 with my dad and 5 year old son on Lake Roosevelt out of Hunters.  It took a while to determine the bite, but after four hours ended up with 5 walleye in the box and one 20” trout.

Info for club members:

Started just North of Hunters on both sides of lake pulling a variety of bottom bouncers.  Immediately caught 20” trout on East bank which kept us there for longer than we should.  Graph indicated only sporadic fish in these areas.  Two boats were fishing deeper on the drop on the West side but we never witnessed them catch any fish during 30 minutes we were near them.  However they were still there a few hours later when we returned to the ramp… guessing they were catching occasional fish or just enough for them to stay in the area.

We made a move a few miles upstream until we came to the flat on the East side where the reservoir narrows.  There were more fish on the graph, showing on traditional sonar and side scan.  A very nice fishing breeze was blowing down the lake with the current so we motored upstream until we graphed fish then would stop and drift past them.  On each of our first few drifts I had very light bites while dragging a motor oil jig tipped with worm and slathered with scent.  One bite bit the tail of my grub off.  While my dad continued to fish by dragging a grub, I switched to a jigging rap to try to trigger a bite by aggressively working it.  The walleye ended up biting this very aggressively.  Had to work for the fish, but bites were consistent.  I ended up catching four by the time it was for us to head back.  I set spot lock on the very southern tip of this flat.  While I picked up the boat my dad could still fish.  He ended up catching the largest walleye of the day.. 21”.  After a slow start, my son did end up reeling in several fish, and by the end had much to occupy himself in the livewell.
