Allan, Patrick, and Greg: Rufus Woods - 4/14
We fished out of Allan's boat on Good Friday. The forecast was for windy and showery weather, so we made the trip to Rufus to find some protection in the deep canyon. It turned out to be a beautiful day, and we could go without jackets during the afternoon. We caught 7 walleyes, 5 rainbows, a white fish, and a northern pike minnow. The walleyes were 16, 19, 20, 22, 22, 22, and 23 inches (all males).
More info for Club Members: There was a good deal of current on Friday. In the main channel, I am guessing that the water was pushing 5 mph. We concentrated on fishing current seams, back eddies, and other slack water areas behind points and humps. Allan picked up a walleye within the first 10 minutes on a bright copper blade bait. That was the only blade bait fish of the day. The other walleyes were taken fishing jigs (3/8 to 1/4 ounce) below the boat. The combination of a rocky bottom and current breaks in 15 to 30 feet of water was key. Color didn't seem to matter. Orange, green, and white jig heads caught fish with various colors of jig bodies tipped with an inch of crawler. Water visibility was only 2 feet.
