Greg and Sanford: Rufus Woods - 4/20

Greg and Sanford made a day trip to Rufus Woods. We got on the water about 9 AM. There were at least 10 rigs in the Seaton's Grove parking lot (quite a few for a Wed). There was a high overcast most of the day with temperatures in the upper 50s. Between 4 PM and 5 PM, rain showers began. I forgot to bring the top for my boat, so we left despite good fishing. We caught 6 walleyes (19, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 26 inches), 3 rainbow trout, and a pike minnow.

More Info for Club Members: We concentrated on current seams, back eddies, and areas of slack water adjacent to current. At one point, I let the boat drift freely in the main channel, and the gps read 5.6 mph. No walleye wants to fight that kind of current, so find spots behind points, humps, and islands. We tried blade baits a bit throughout the day with no success. All fish were caught using 3/8 to 1/2 ounce jigs with a 3-4 inch curl tail grub or paddle tail. We tipped our hooks with a pinch of crawler. Color didn't seem to matter. We moved often. Fishing a spot for more than 30 minutes was unproductive. Depth varied from 8 feet to 30 feet.

Sanford caught his personal best, a 24 inch walleye weighing over 4 pounds.
