Jim and Seth K: Roosevelt - 6/28

I took my Son Seth out with me for an evening of fishing on Spokane Arm or Lake Roosevelt on evening of Friday June 28th. Attempted to fish new to me weedbeds plus some of my old stand by’s, but all of our fish this trip were taken off of a single rocky hump. Ended up catching three walleye up to 18”, and three SMB up to 19” (3 lb 12oz!!).

With sister away at camp I spent the day with my 8 YO son Seth, starting with hot wheels at home, McDonald’s play structure / eats, and then made our way to Lake Roosevelt. We put in at about 3PM, and ran up river to some places I suspected there would be weedbeds near current edges. Found plenty of weeds, but none as established as my old stand by’s. Seth was using a weedless weed weasel jighead while I stuck with a standard jig and same plastic I had success with last Monday. All weedbeds we fished through out the day brought us zero fish. We did pull up on a rocky hump and casted Shad Raps over the hump. Seth immediately hooked up, and had a nice 19-20” fish up to the boat, but it spit the hook while we could clearly watch it, but before being close enough to net it. Seth also caught another smaller walleye and a 12” SMB on his own. This was Seth’s first trip with his “new” rod… I took one of the spin-cast reels he received at the kids fishing event, and mounted it to a 7’6” casting rod. He now has a rod that performs equally with all of my adult rods. He can manage a spinning reel, but still asks for a spin-cast reel. For this rocky hump, Seth had picked out a #7 jointed shad rap with blue back white sides and orange belly from his tackle box, and was having more success than I, so I found a similar lure in my box to throw. I caught one 19” walleye which bit 5’ from boat, and two SMB… largest was 19”, and 3lb 12 oz. which Seth had a great time reeling in. This action lasted for about 40 minutes then suddenly died.… rest of the time our fishing was without success. We stopped fishing at 8PM.
