Greg: Roosevelt - 7/10
I took my time getting to the lake on Friday. It was nearly 1 PM by the time I started fishing. The high temp was in the upper 70s with lots of sunshine and a 5 to 10 mph wind. Fishing was slower than I expected. I had only 5 keepers in my live well by 8 PM. I had fished 7 or 8 reliable spots, and decided to try one more before quitting for the day. A weed bed that had been exposed to the wind all day finally yielded another 6 or 7 walleyes and several other bites that I missed. I ended the day with 10 keepers between 14 and 20 inches.
More info for club members: As I crested the hill near Porcupine Bay, I saw a nice chop on the lake and mud lines near the shoreline. I spent the first two hours casting crankbaits into mud lines and weed beds in spots that have been productive in previous years. I had solid bites, but both pulled free. Missed bites was the story of the day. Without much luck on cranks, I motored up beyond Buoy 7 into the narrow channel and trolled bouncers. I caught a 20 inch walleye within 20 minutes and lost another half way to the boat. The wind made fishing this area tough, so I fished between Buoy 7 and Marker 5 and caught another fish or two. Next, I went to the Narrows and picked up another couple in 35 feet. Blue Creek had a few small fish in 50 to 65 feet…throw backs. Nothing at the landslide. My last spot of desperation was the Cemetery. I hadn’t fished that area in 5 years. As I got out my fillet board, and began cleaning my 5 fish, I made a couple passes along the weed edge. Pretty soon my live well had 10 walleyes, and the bites were so frequent my worms were gone. The fish at the Cemetery were in the 12 to 15 inch range while the Buoy 7 fish were 16 to 20 inches.
