Greg and Travis: Rufus Woods - 6/27
For years I have promised Travis that I would take him to Rufus Woods. After a long, hot day in the sun on Friday, I wasn’t excited about making the trip first thing in the morning on Saturday. But Travis delivered a sob story late Friday evening about needing a fishing fix really bad and his boat needed trolling motor parts. I relented and we met up at 630 AM and made the trip to Grand Coulee. The fishing was almost identical to the week prior when I went by myself. Together, we caught 15 walleyes and about 10 triploid rainbows. About a third of the walleyes were over 20 inches. Longest fish went to Travis (23.5 inches)…first fish of the day. However, there may have been a couple of thick 21 inchers that may have weighed more.
More info for club members: There were as many boats as I have ever seen at Seaton’s Grove launch. When we arrived shortly after 8 AM, more than 15 rigs were parked and more came later. Many of them were fishing for the big triploids. With 195 kcfs pushing through Grand Coulee, the walleye were in predictable spots. Current seems and back eddys with a depth between 20 and 30 feet were usually good for a couple fish. We didn’t spend much time fishing a spot. All walleye and trout were caught on blade baits…many custom painted by Travis. No more whining Travis.
