Greg K: Roosevelt - 9/11
I headed to Roosevelt for the Friday Club Fish Day at Ft Spokane. Half way between Davenport and Porcupine Bay I saw a bank of smoke to the northwest so I decided to launch at Porcupine Bay rather than try fishing the main lake. As I arrived at the Porcupine Launch, it was smoky there too but not bad. I ran into Walleye Club member Frank P and his buddy Mike at the launch. It was nice getting to know Frank as we ran into each other several times during the day. Around noon, Travis S and his uncles from Minnesota arrived to fish the afternoon. I ended up with 9 keepers by the time the smoke got thick around 4 PM. Six of the walleyes were 18 inches and the others were in the 14 to 16 inch range.
More info for club members: I spent a couple hours in the morning fishing Blue Creek hoping to run into club members as they motored up the Arm. I caught 5 walleyes there and a rainbow in 40 to 50 feet of water. Only 2 of the walleyes were keepers…barely. I made a pass through the Narrows without a bite when I met Travis by the Pump House. Together we motored up to Buoy 7. Fishing was steady in 25 to 35 feet of water along channel edges. I had my best success on chrome or gold spinners. Toward the end of the day, I picked up a nice walleye trolling big Flicker Minnows over the humps and channel edges near Buoy 7. As the smoke got thicker, I made a few casts with crankbaits shallow weed beds which produced a smallmouth bass that was nearly 19 inches.
