Greg and Bob: Roosevelt - 3/31/21
We launched out of Porcupine Bay around 9 AM. Only one lane of the boat launch is available. The Bureau of Reclamation is using the other lanes to load fill material to repair shore erosion upriver. Be prepared to wait in line at the launch and it can be a tight squeeze backing the trailer into the water. https://www.nps.gov/laro/planyourvisit/conditions.htm
The bite was slow. We landed 6 nice sized keepers by early afternoon ranging from 15 to 19 inches. We tried a few spots between 2 PM and 5 PM and managed to catch another 2 or 3 walleyes, but they were pretty small. The weather was beautiful with sunny skies, light wind, and afternoon temps in the low 60s. The water temperature in the Spokane Arm was 45 degrees. Water clarity was 4 or 5 feet.
More info for club members: Our first couple of trolling passes were between “the Steps” and Marker 5. We tried several colors of Smile blades as we slow trolled the channel and the channel edges. Bob managed to catch one walleye. None of the other boats in the area were catching anything, so we motored to the stretch between Buoy 7 and Marker 5. Within minutes, I landed an 18 inch male. We caught several more keepers pulling Smile blades and half a crawler during the next 2 to 3 hrs. There were 7 or 8 other boats in the area catching walleyes as well. The bite died between 1 and 2 PM. On the way back to the launch, we tried Buoy 1 and Blue Creek with no luck. We finished the day in the southeast corner of Porcupine Bay where we marked lots of fish between 25 and 35 feet and caught a few small ones…only 1 was big enough to keep. We tried lots of color combos and found no clear color preference.
