Our family spent 3 days and 2 nights camping at Porcupine Bay. We experienced wonderful weather and smoke free skies. More time was spent boating, tubing, and playing games at camp than fishing, but my daughter and I did manage to spend about an hour a day fishing. Thursday evening we caught one walleye and missed several bites, but we did locate the spot that proved to be productive the next couple of days. We returned late Friday morning with a mission to catch dinner, and we got 4 walleyes between 13 and 17 inches. On Saturday, my daughter caught 3 small walleyes while I missed several bites. Eight walleyes in 3 hours of fishing was good considering the lake level of 1278 feet which was a drop of about 10 feet in the last 3 weeks. Water temperature 70 to 73. Water clarity, very clear.
More info for club members: With low water levels and weed beds exposed, we targeted deep structure. We slow trolled bouncers and crawlers on the steep break on the upstream side of the Blue Creek flat. We caught one walleye in 50 feet of water, but the rest came out of 60 to 70 feet. Chrome, gold, and chartreuse smile blades behind 3 ounce bottom bouncers were productive. Half a crawler was more effective than a full crawler. Most bites were subtle taking only a small tip of the worm’s tail.
