I got a late start and arrived at Porcupine Bay late in the morning. Areas that I caught walleyes the previous week were unproductive. I fished from noon to 330 pm making several moves before I got my first bite. I ended the day around 530 pm with 9 keepers measuring between 15 and 17 inches. The bites I got were subtle., and I missed a lot of bites. It was a bright sunny day with temperatures in the 50s. The wind was gusty out of the northeast, but I found many places to fish that were out of the wind. The water temperature was 48 degrees. Water level 1281 feet.
More info for club members: I began fishing Blue Creek, nothing. I moved to the bottom of the Narrows between 25 and 50 feet, nothing. I wasn’t marking anything in spots where I had seen fish on sonar the week prior. Thinking that walleyes had migrated up the Arm to spawn, I decided to motor upstream until I found a group of boats having success. This plan ended up being flawed since there were no boats above the lower Narrows. I finally stopped my treck upstream in the channel a couple miles above Buoy 7. There was decent current in this narrow section of the Arm so I tried blade baits in the current seams and back eddies. Nothing. I trolled downstream weaving in and out of current and slow water. Nothing. I trolled the channel near Buoy 7. Nothing. I got my first walleye above “The Steps” in the channel at a depth 45 feet. I continued trolling downstream and got a double when I found 55 feet depth about 2 miles below “The Steps”. I continued catching walleyes on chartreuse Smile Blades behind 3 oz bouncers in 55 feet between “The Steps” and Buoy 3 until I stopped fishing around 530 pm.
