Greg and Ken: Roosevelt - 6/18/2024
Ken and I got a day without wind so we decided to give the main lake a try out of Fort Spokane. It took us a while to find an area with consistent bites, but we did end up having a productive day. We got 16 keepers before rain showers and white caps developed around 4 pm. The most memorable part of the trip was a visit from a very friendly duck. She swam around the boat for about 45 minutes begging for food. She jumped into the boat 5 or 6 times and paced along the stern and gunwales. The duck kept us company until we found a trolling pass that produced fish. As we started reeling in walleyes and dipping the net in the water, the duck lost interest and left us. This is not my first visit from this duck. Last fall, she swam around my boat for a half hour or more but didn’t jump aboard. Water temperature was 63 degrees.
More info for club members: We caught our walleyes at Outhouse Flats between 50 and 70 feet of water. We started in 30 feet and gradually worked our way out to the edge that dumps into the main channel. We marked almost nothing until we got to the deep edge. Walleyes ran small in this area…13 to 15 inches with a few up to 16. Three ounce bouncers with chartreuse or green Smile Blades worked the best with a double hook crawler harness.
