Greg and Gordon: Roosevelt - 6/3-4/2025
My in-laws were in town for 10 days in early June. When Gordon and I saw the forecast for good weather on the 3rd and 4th, we took his RV to Roosevelt for a couple days of walleye fishing. We enjoyed good fishing, beautiful scenery, and productive fishing. We got 17 keepers on Tuesday fishing from 1 PM to 6 PM. On Wednesday, we got 16 keepers including 3 walleyes around 20 inches. In general, walleyes were in the 15 to 17 inch range, perfect size for a nice fillet. Gordon went back to Illinois with plenty of walleye for his freezer. The water temperature was 57 degrees with excellent water clarity. Lake elevation was 1277 ft and rising.

We launched out of Northport on Tuesday after lunch and motored downstream about 3 miles. We fished a rock and gravel bar behind a series of islands focusing on current seams and weed beds. We had 3 walleyes in the live well within our first 4 casts on a copper blade bait tossed into a current seam. Another productive spot was near emerging weeds below the islands. We hooked five pike and landed 3 including a 24 incher. Pike would hit our jigs that were cast tight to the weeds while walleyes were holding nearby in water generally in 20 feet or deeper. After an hour of casting, my father-in-law needed to sit down, so we changed to trolling gear with bottom bouncers and Smile Blades. Our best luck trolling was in 20 to 25 feet in the vicinity of weed beds.
On Wednesday, we motored close to the Canadian border and fished similar structure…a gravel/rock bar behind some rock islands. Blade baits cast into eddies and current seams was productive. Jigs cast toward weed beds along the shoreline also produced walleyes up to 20 inches. The walleyes near the Canadian border were bigger than the walleyes downstream of Northport. A copper blade bait was productive both days, so there was no need to change colors. We used natural colors (brown, crawdad, and olive) jigs on orange or green jig heads (5/8 and 3/4 ounce) tipped with a crawler. When trolling, silver Smile Blades and chartreuse sparkle Smile Blades produced well.
