Kettle Falls: June Picnic - 6/19-23

Fishing was challenging. Walleyes were scattered and seemed to have narrow bite windows during the 4 days of the June Picnic. The weather varied from sunny and warm on Thu the 19th to windy and cool Fri to rainy Sat, and clear and calm on Sun. The most consistent bite was Thu and Fri ahead of the rain and cold front. Spots that were productive for club members were around Evans and Marcus. A handful of walleyes up to 20 inches were caught, but the majority were in the 15 to 17 inch range. The water temperautre was 60 to 63 degrees, and the lake level near 1285 feet.

More info for club members: Greg and Ken put in a long day Thursday launching at 830 AM and fishing until 5 PM. They got 17 keepers with the majority of them coming in 25 to 35 feet of water around Marcus and Evans. The combination of modest current and steep breaks into deep water was the key to locating scattered concentrations of walleyes. Drop offs in the vicinity of weed beds were productive. Greg, Don L, and John K (new member) got 13 keepers on Friday before being blown off the lake at 2 PM fishing the same areas around Evans and Marcus. Greg and Don L. experienced a hot bite at Marcus Saturday morning as the rain began with 10 keepers in the 18 to 20 inch range. The bite Sunday was slow with Greg and Stan getting only 3 keepers between 830 AM and 1 PM behind the cold front under clear skies and no wind.

New member John K poses with his first walleye. He caught 6 or 7 walleyes on Friday…a good first day of walleye fishing!

Mark got this 18 incher Saturday evening after the rain stopped.
