Greg, Eli and Justin: Potholes - 5/10
Eli, Justin, and I made a day trip to Potholes. None of us have had much experience fishing Potholes, but 3 limits of nice walleyes came pretty easy. Fish averaged 16-18 inches. Eli caught the biggest fish which was close to 21 inches. The weather was perfect. Almost no wind and afternoon temperatures near 70. Our only complaint was the tremendous bug hatch everywhere on the lake. The hatch probably had something to do with the hot walleye bite. Fish were puking bug larvae in the live well.
More details: We spent most of the day in the Crab Creek area. We caught our first 13 walleyes fishing the edge of the Crab Creek channel at 16 to 19 feet of water. Dragging 1/4 ounce jigs produced most of our fish in the morning. By early afternoon, it seemed like the armada of boats moving onto the nearby sand dunes. We switched to pulling spinners to locate fish on the expanse of rolling dunes. After finding a school of actively feeding fish, we stopped and jigged the area and put another 9 walleyes in the boat. We finished the day in Lind Coulee and Justin put our last 3 walleyes in the boat in about 20 minutes pulling spinners in 18 feet. Perch colors worked the best. Most fish were taken with a color combination of orange and green.
