Greg and Kids: Roosevelt - 7/14-15
The family went to Porcupine Bay for a couple of days. We spent most of our time playing at the beach and tubing behind the boat. However, we did fish for 35 minutes on Tuesday evening before sunset. Grant caught a little smallmouth, Lindsay caught a 14 inch walleye, and our third fish was a big one! Grant handled the net and Lindsay yelled with delight when we landed a 27 inch walleye weighing 6 pounds. We rushed to camp to get Mama to take a picture before we released it.
More info for club members: The Narrows is usually a close spot that provides good action for the kids when we camp at Porcupine. I have never caught a big fish there in years of trying. We ran halfway up the Narrows and started our drift downstream. We used 2 ounce bouncers and trolled spinners. Lindsay picked a small (size 2) copper holographic spinner with orange and red. Seemed like a good choice for early summer to match the hatch. Grant selected the biggest spinner in my box, a size 5 red, green and silver spinner that I only use in the fall. Much to my surprise, the spinner Grant selected caught all three fish that evening. Hmmmm...he also chose that spinner last year at the Fall Camp Out for his trophy fish. Not sure we were out long enough to identify a pattern, but we were in 20 to 30 feet trolling 1.5 mph to keep that big blade spinning.
